Chapter Four
Beyond Reasonable Doubt
It’s been at least four months since that night I had with Nikki. I think of it from time to time wondering where we would have been now. At times I feel like she was a fantasy, and other times I feel that God was showing me something. I haven’t talked to any females or attempted to since that night. I knew if I was going to find Ms. Right I had to take time out for myself.
I still hang out with my co-workers from time to time. Ken would always want to go somewhere for happy hour and the rest of us would follow, except Jason. He was the lucky one who settled down with a nice woman who has a good head on her shoulders, I knew if he could settle down I wasn’t too far behind.
Jason reminded me of myself back when I was twenty one and didn’t know any better. Reality strut him when the woman gave him an ultimatum. She told him he could either continue hanging out with us each night, or come be with someone loyal and have a change to start a future together. It was obvious he chose her, and I wasn’t mad because I would’ve done the same damn thing. He still hangs out with us, but not as much and the rest of that can respect that.
I sat at my desk getting ready to end my day, all work I’ve done was completed and my bed was calling my name. I was looking forward to watching some highlights and I knew a bud light was waiting for me in the refrigerator.
“You want to go to happy hour?” Ken asked as he made his way to my desk.
I shook my head no, “not tonight, I am dead ass tired and it looks like you could use some rest too.” I said looking at his dark circles.
“Naw, I need to stop at the bar before I head home. I need to be a little buzz with the day I’m having.
I chuckled, “ain’t nothing wrong with that, I’m sure Darryl and Jerome won’t mind going but I’m beat…have a drink for me though.” I requested. Ken smirked and walk off, “I will see you tomorrow.” He said not looking back at me. I nodded knowing he wouldn’t see the expression on my face, but Ken knows me like a brother.
I headed home and did exactly what my intentions were to, sit and watch the highlights. I didn’t even bother taking off my clothes. Before I knew it my mind was soaked into Sport Center, until my phone ranged and threw me off track.
“Hello.”
“Hey, it’s Krissie, how are things?” She asked.
“Things are good…it’s good to hear from you…how’s…how’s your daughter.” I said sitting up on the couch and placing my drink on the table.
“She’s doing well, in school, and making the grades I approve of.”
“That’s wassup, I am so glad to hear that…how are you?” I asked.
“Well…I’m fine, things are going well for me at work and I plan to move out of Atlanta soon.
